1. Croton- Grand Street Fire 4-5-06

Units arrived to find heavy fire blowing out of a 3rd floor apartment. The initial crew made a push into the apartment, contained the fire and pulled out an unconscious victim who made a full recovery. The actions of those involved earned several members of the CFD the WCVFA Firefighter of the Year Awards.

2. Hawthorne – Tornado (7-12-06)

An F-2 Tornado which began on the Rockland side of the Hudson River swept across central Westchester, from Tarrytown to the Long Island Sound, cutting a broad path of destruction in many communities. Many mutual aid rescue resources responded to assist the emergency services in Mount Pleasant. Only the 8th on record since 1950, the tornado was the strongest ever in Westchester.

3. Yonkers- Car into Water MVA’s (2-23 and 3-25)

On the early morning of February 23rd, a male drove off the Sprain Parkway and into Sprain Lake. After wandering for an extended period of time, the male notified police that his girlfriend was still in the car. The victim was later recovered by divers, leaving many unanswered questions about the accident. A few weeks later a male drove off the Saw Mill Parkway and into the Saw Mill River only to be pulled from the partially submerged and sinking vehicle by Yonkers ESU.

4. New Rochelle- 2nd Alarm 3-19-06

New Rochelle Firefighters faced heavy flames upon arrival to this overcrowded ballon wood frame OMD on a cold January night. Several residents were jumping from the upper floors of the building when the first due units pulled up, and many others needed rescue. .

5. Yonkers- 4th Alarm on Morningside Ave. (1-11-06)

An early morning fire tore through two wood- frame multiple dwellings leaving over a dozen residents homeless. A tenant burning pine needles on a stove was found to be the cause of the fire.

6. Mount Vernon-  South 3rd Ave. 3rd Alarm with (2-17-06)

Shortly after arriving at what would be a 3-Alarm fire, an EDP drives off with L-3.  After being stopped by Mount Vernon ESU, the male stated that he was only trying to help. A few weeks later, the same male was arrested in Yonkers for burglary and assault.

7. Yonkers – Plane Crash Into The River (1-2-06)

After giving a distress call off Manhattan, a small plane with two onboard crashed into the Hudson River off the City Pier. After hearing the distress call, NYPD Aviation and USCG Helo from Atlantic City Air Station quickly removed both victims from the water and transported them to Jacobi Hospital.

8. Ossining- Main Street Fire 10-26-06 & 1-19-06

While giving incoming units assignments and calling for Mutual Aid, Ossining Chief Mauro Santucci and others had to use aerial ladders to rescue victims. This also was the second time that fire struck this building in less than a year.

9. Mount Vernon- Multiple Alarms minutes apart and blocks away (4-5-06)

While MVFD operated at western Beef, a second structure fire began just blocks away on Franklin St. with New Rochelle companies arriving first due.

10. Irvington- Fire at The Unification Church (2-18-06)

In a particularly busy year for Irvington Fire, members responded to a fire in a cottage on the gated grounds of the controversial Unification Church. Under the watchful eye of the “Moonies,” crews fought the fire in one of Rev. Moon’s residences, complete with weapons and ammunition.

Incidents were selected by a panel of EMTBravo.com moderators by vote and also ranked based on, with no factor holding any more weight than another, size and scope of incident, response to incident, loss of life, effect on response, training and operating policy.

We would also like to remember Chief Robert Scnibbe and Lt. John Stegr, who both fell victim to heart attacks while in performance of their duty in the past year, as well as all lost this past year, Line of Duty or otherwise.
