1. Westchester County– Major Widespread Flooding
(4-15/16-07)


After an early March storm brought major flooding to the Sound Shore, An April Nor’easter arrived with record setting rainfall. Areas not only prone to flooding were hit hard, but some sections that have never seen flood waters tested responders for more than two days. At the height of the floods, a 78-year old man lost his life in a Mamaroneck house fire where the response was delayed due to weather conditions.Some of the most far reaching mutual aid assignments of current times were also seen during the storm.  

2.    Tarrytown – Hackley School Fire (8-4-07)



A midsummer night thunderstorm was blamed for a fire that destroyed three buildings of the108-year old school. Nearly two dozen departments from across the county responded  to the fire and even brought Rockland County over the bridge for cover.

3. Yonkers- Double Fatal Fire on Vineyard Ave
(10-3-07)



Two people were killed in a fire at a condemned house that was supposed to be vacant. Two brothers escaped the early morning fire, but one went back inside to save his brother’s girlfriend. The electricity to the home was cut off after the house was condemned leading the squatters to resort to candles for light. Those candles were believed to have been the cause of the fire.

4.    Mount Vernon-  Sanford Boulevard Furniture Store
Fire (2-7-07)

Firefighters spent most the night knocking down a fire at Munrod Interior Upholstery on Sanford Boulevard.
After attempting an aggressive interior attack on the sprawling furniture store and warehouse, companies fought the fire and freezing temperatures out on the street. .

5.    Vista- Lumber Yard Fire (4-15-07)


Eleven departments from Westchester and Connecticut responded to the fire at Rings End Lumber yard.
Volunteers spent hours containing the fire under heavy rain during the early stages of the April Nor’Easter.

 
6.    Yonkers- Trinity Plaza Senior Housing Fire (2-23-07)

Yonkers Fire, Police and Empress units evacuated dozens of elderly residents, many with medical conditions, from the Trinity Plaza senior housing complex as fire tore through a top floor apartment.
High winds created intense conditions from the corner apartment, with no serious injuries reported.

 

7.   Elmsford- Multi-Alarm, Multi-Home Fire(11-20-07)

Elmsford units responding to a late-night call for a structure fire, arrived to find a fully-involved dwelling already exposing to a home next door. The first arriving police officer rescued an occupant from the roof of the front porch. Five mutual aid departments (paid and volunteer) confined the fire to the two homes.
     

8.    Westchester County- Multi-County, Multi-State
Pursuits (3-23-07, 5-1-07, 7-27-07)


In what seemed like the year of long-distance police chases, three of the most unusual pursuits included two states and five counties combined. In March, a pursuit of an EDP began in Chester, NY and was ended by E.S.U. in Yonkers. In May, a perp driving the cab from a tractor trailer was chased through two states and jumped off the Tappan Zee Bridge. Finally in July, a homicide suspect made it over two bridges, from New Jersey to Rockland and was caught when his vehicle became stuck in the mud.

9.    Hartsdale- Firehouse Fire (1-19-07)


While the members were preparing the meal, fire broke out in the construction for the new addition of the West Hartsdale Fire Station, causing heavy damage to the addition.

10.   Yonkers- Stolen Corpse (11-15-07)


In perhaps the most unusual police call of the year, in a city that gets it’s share of the unusual, a stolen corpse was reported at the Saint Joseph’s nursing home on South Broadway. Security reported that the family of a recently deceased had been using a wheel chair to remove belongings during the night. On their last trip out of the home, the deceased was removed, placed in a car and driven home to Brewster, NY.
